Kapok is vegan

Kapok is just a plant fibre so animal lovers can enjoy its benefits knowing that it’s cruelty free. It doesn’t even require fertilisers, pesticides or any other chemicals that might have been tested on animals. It’s fully vegan.

Some people choose DOWN and FEATHER pillows. Unfortunately these come at a very high cost – to the bird.

The most economical way to harvest down and feathers involves an extremely painful practice called live-plucking. The birds (usually geese or ducks) are restrained and their feathers and down are torn out of their bodies while they are fully conscious. It causes skin tears, bleeding and immense pain to the bird. It’s a very disturbing process to witness. The down will eventually grow back and can be harvested again and again, repeatedly putting the birds through this hugely traumatic experience. Keeping the bird alive for plucking is much more profitable for the industry.

Some retailers have taken a stand against this and offer a product with an RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certificate. Unfortunately it’s still a common practice to live-pluck and undercover investigations have even exposed it occurring at some facilities that have ethical certification.

Birds need their feathers more than we do – let’s choose a vegan Kapok pillow instead.

WOOL production also has to shoulder a significant weight of cruelty. Mulesing is one example where a large chunk of flesh is sliced off the animals backside without any pain management. Castration without pain relief is no different and it’s not unusual for the sheep to suffer injuries from hasty and careless shearing practices. Heavy-handed handling is also common. All of this is hidden from the animal-loving consumer.

To increase the annual wool yields some farms have an additional shearing roster in the winter. After being sheared animals are released back into the fields with no protection from the cold and sometimes die from exposure.

Sheep dipping is also a cruel practice. Animals are forced into troughs filled with a potent mix of pesticides and fungicides. Some have taken this a step further and herd the reluctant sheep into a metal cage which is then closed and lowered into a tank full of chemicals. The animals are left completely immersed for an uncomfortable length of time.
