What is Kapok?

What is Kapok - Kapok Pod

The perfect pillow fill

Kapok, also known as Java cotton, silk cotton, samauma and kekabu is the luxurious fibre found in the large seedpods of the tall, majestic Kapok tree. There’s no need to farm these trees as there’s an abundance of them growing wild in the tropical rainforests. We source our Kapok from Java, South-East Asia, which is where the best Kapok grows.

Locals collect the seedpods, extract the fibre and manually remove the seeds. There’s no pesticides or chemicals needed at any stage. The result is a clean, soft, smooth and healthy floss that is absolutely perfect for filling pillows.

Because it’s a natural repellent of moisture it prevents the growth of mold. It’s naturally anti-bacterial and bug resistant so dust mites and other unwelcome guests, that could negatively affect your health, won’t call it home. It’s hypoallergenic, very breathable and naturally organic.

Kapok will last for many years but once you decide it’s time to say goodbye, you can simply put it in your compost and let it naturally return to earth. How perfect!

Kapok tree - Pillow Rebels

The most sustainable fibre

Kapok is considered to be the most sustainable fibre present on the market today. Unlike cultivated crops, like cotton, the Kapok tree grows and thrives in the wild without human interference. It doesn’t require extensive land use, irrigation, farming, pesticides or any other chemicals that would pollute the soil, air and groundwater and end up in the fibre too.

This magnificent tree grows abundantly in the rainforests contributing to local biodiversity and absorbing large amounts of CO2. Once the seedpods have been collected, the tree is left perfectly healthy and intact providing a source of income for local communities year after year. Kapok floss is totally biodegradable meaning you can compost it at home. Feed it to the worms and it will be absorbed back into the land. It’s 100% natural.

Kapok truly is natures favorite.

Kapok is non-toxic

No toxins in Kapok

The Kapok tree flourishes in the wild and doesn’t need to be tended to by humans.  So it’s not fed fertilisers or drenched in pesticides or any other chemicals. Locals collect the seedpods, remove the fibre and take the seeds out of the fibre all by hand. No machines, no chemical processes. It’s as simple as that . The product is 100% natural and clean.
